4-Year-Old Suspended for Long Hair

December 21st, 2009

Mona Reeder, Dallas Morning News / MCT

Taylor Pugh has been suspended from pre-kindergarten because of his long hair. He now spends his days in the library, serving an in-school suspension.

At Floyd Elementary School in Texas, boys’ hair must be kept out of the eyes and cannot extend below the bottom of earlobes or over the collar of a dress shirt.

Last month, a seventh-grader in the same school district was sent home for wearing black skinny pants. His parents now homeschool him.

Do you think Taylor should be suspended for his long hair, or is the school district overreacting?

Newborn Clothes: A Checklist of Newborn Clothes for the First 8 Weeks

December 16th, 2009

epic-large

The first eight weeks of a baby’s life requires a few key pieces of newborn clothes. New babies are messy, so multiples of each item are recommended. But don’t fret, the list is short; your newborn’s clothes needs are very minimal.

10 Baby Bodysuits and Baby onesies

This list was designed with you in mind. I suggest purchasing multiples of each item to reduce the amount of time you will spend doing baby laundry in those first precious (and sleep-deprived!) weeks.

Baby bodysuits and onesies are the foundation for every baby outfit. They provide an easy way to give your baby an extra layer of warmth, and with snaps between the legs, they stay put and keep your baby’s other clothing from rubbing up against their new and delicate skin.

There are a variety of baby bodysuits on the market (www.babyallday.com). Some are basic, solid colors. Others have witty sayings written across them.

7 Sets of Baby Sleepwear
Baby sleepwear comes in a variety of styles, from one-pieces that snap or zip from the leg to the chin, two-piece outfits that include pants and a top to gowns and bag sleepers or wearable blankets.

What’s important is fit as it’s directly related to the risk of accidental suffocation.

7 One-Piece Outfits

One-piece outfits, also known as rompers and/or coveralls, will simplify those first weeks of dressing your newborn baby. No worrying about finding pants that match a shirt – you just slip on one outfit and call it good.

You will have no problem finding one-piece outfits for babies as they are all over the market. Organic, conventional, with embroidery, solid colors; you name it, it’s out there somewhere.

To make life a little easier for you, and more comfortable for your baby, look for these key things when shopping for one-piece baby outfits.

1 Sweater or Jacket
Depending on what season your baby is born, a sweater or jacket may be necessary for proper cool-weather dressing. Anything that buttons or zips up will do the trick. Again, you really just want to avoid pulling a sweater or jacket over your baby’s head, and you want to be sure that the weight of the jacket is appropriate for the season.

Socks or Crib Shoes
Baby socks will serve to keep little toes warm – crib shoes will do the same. Opt for elastic at the ankle, or a knit with a little stretch to it. Handmade crib shoes with buttons and embellishments are very cute, but if they un-attach themselves, they pose a choking hazard. Shoes are not necessary for newborn babies

Baby Clothes Size and Age Chart

baby-sitting

Buying baby clothes is a lot like playing the lottery; you hedge your bets on a number, and hope it’s the right one.

But it doesn’t have to be that way. While it’s true that babies grow really fast, it is possible to buy clothes for them that will fit – at least for now. Use our size and age chart to help determine what size you should buy.

Remember: when in doubt, make your purchase based on weight and height rather than age! It’s always safe to go one size bigger.

US Size and Age Chart

Age/Size Weight Length Bootie/Shoe Size Sock Size
Newborn Up to 7 lbs Up to 17″ N/A N/A
Up to 3 Months 7-12 lbs 17-23″ 3 Up to 6 Months

Now when it comes to finding the best baby clothes around… well that’s where babyallday.com comes into the equation. How Long Should Your Child Sleep?

December 10th, 2009

sleeping

Mothers often ask themselves this question. Only the child can give the answer. Some children need to sleep a lot, the others just vice versa. If the child is full, well-groomed full, sleeps in a cool room, you can let him/her decide how much to sleep. Most infants, if they are satisfied and their stomach works properly, sleep from feeding to feeding. But some children from the birth sleep for a very short time and not because something is disturbing them. You do not need to take any action.

The older the child becomes, the less he/she sleeps. Usually, the first waking period begins at about 4-5 o’clock in the evening. Each child has his/her sleep schedule. By the end of the first year of life, he/she will sleep 2 times a day. Then he/she will move to a one-time sleep. Only in infancy parents can be sure that the child sleeps as long as he/she wants. In 2 years the child is a complex human being. He/she may sleep less than his/her body demands, because of the excitement and anxiety for other reasons.

Falling asleep. It is advisable to accustom the child to the thought that he/she should sleep immediately after taking a meal. Some children like to play after meal. I will recommend trying to break this habit. Accustom the child to sleep in his bed.
Most children become accustomed both to silence and to moderate noise. Therefore there is no need to walk on tiptoe and whisper. This will only teach him/her to silence, and he/she will wake up from the unexpected sounds. If the child is accustomed to normal household sounds, you can safely take the guests in the next room, watch TV or listen to the radio. You can even enter the child’s room without wakening him/her up.

Speech Development Milestones

December 3rd, 2009

baby-talk

You will quickly recognize your baby’s first language – a cry – this comes long before smiles and words. These early cries are reactions to circumstances – cries of pain, of hunger, thirst, fear of a sudden noise and all the rest. This is your baby’s basic way of communicating with you for the first few weeks.

After this the baby will be able to focus his eyesight better and will begin to recognize family members, first of all his parents and then the wider family, and so will emerge that first smile – often in response to a smile from a carer.

At about the same time babbling begins.

This isn’t in response to adult language, but is the baby’s own way of sorting out all the possible sounds he is capable of. So parents will hear ‘Co,co,co,’, ‘Kah, Kah Kah’ and all the rest. Most carers will respond in a positive way – this is interpreted by them as the beginnings of communication and speech.

It is possible that ‘Dada’ and ‘Mama’ are uttered just by chance, but when the baby gets a positive response each time, he learns to use these sounds. This can really be said to be the beginnings of true speech as opposed to just communication.

You will be aware that your baby is maturing. His size is increasing, but also he is learning to control movement – to reach out and to put things in his mouth. He learns to control his mouth in order to cope with various foods and to swallow them instead of them dribbling out.

This control means that he can articulate sounds better too as he learns to control his airflow. When other words come, they will be indistinct at first – only recognizable perhaps to the most doting parent or grandparent. But as carers repeat correctly the sounds a child is trying to articulate gradually sounds become clearer.

At about a year old most children will be able to say at least one word clearly. Next comes the joining together of words - in twos at first – ‘Good dog’.

You will notice lots of new words – perhaps as many as twenty words a month.

But your child will obviously be able to understand more than he says. If you say ‘Pick up the teddy’ he will do this long before he can say ‘Pick up’. So he understands verbs, but may not use them yet.

The next stage is the questioning stage – ‘What’s that? , Why’ How? This is a very easy stage to recognize as a child’s curiosity is such a strong force as he seeks to make sense of the world around him.

This can get quite wearing if you are the person who has to answer all the questions J But I would say be grateful that your child is curious and is capable of asking those interminable questions, though when there are twenty questions in as many minutes it is hard to keep answering.

He is also able by this time to follow directions – ‘Fetch me your shoes’ or ‘Put on your hat’. Gradually your child will be able to follow more complicated directions – do this first and then that. ‘Put on your socks and then go and get your boots.’

He can give opinions – ‘I like that’ or ‘I want the blue one’. Long conversations become possible with adults that he knows, and whether or not you agree, he will do his own thing.

Your child will still have lots of new things and words to learn, but he should have, by 4 or 5 years old, all the tools he needs to communicate in life.

Dressing your baby this Winter…

November 27th, 2009

snowsuitSome new parents have a tendency to “over dress” their babies, without even realizing it. Then, as they’re driving down the highway, the baby starts crying in the backseat, and they just can’t seem to figure out why. Many times, the babies are just over-heated.

If you’re wearing a long-sleeve shirt and a light weight jacket, your baby should be fine in the same type of baby outerwear. If it makes you feel more comfortable, bring along a light weight blanket to throw over the car seat or stroller, just in case.

When it’s snowing or windy, just be sure to put hats and mittens on them, keeping their ears protected from the wind and snow.

Avoid cocooning them in multiple blankets – even when it’s really cold outside. You have to remember that your children are not usually outside for very long, so keep them comfortable while they’re in the car and try not to over bundle them.

Be sure check out www.babyallday.com for some great winter items and Christmas gifts!
